Awami League leader injured while fleeing through rooftop after seeing police
Banned Awami League leader Minhajul Islam was injured while trying to escape through the roof of his house to avoid arrest in Kurigram. Later, he was arrested by the police in an injured condition. The incident took place on Wednesday night in Sannyasi village of Holokhana union of Kurigram Sadar upazila.
Minhajul is the former deputy propaganda secretary of Kurigram district Awami League and former president of the Kurigram district branch of the banned Chhatra League. He has also served as a member of the Kurigram district council and acting chairman.
Police said that there is an arrest warrant against Minhajul in two cases, including the July murder case of Shaheed Ashiq. He has been admitted to Kurigram General Hospital in an injured condition. Police said that one of his toes has been cut and a bone has been broken.
According to local and police sources, a team of police from Kurigram Sadar Police Station went to Minhajul’s house in Sannyasi village at around 1:30 am on Wednesday based on a secret tip-off. The police surrounded the house and called out to him, but no one responded from inside. At one point, he tried to escape through the roof after sensing the presence of the police in the house, according to the police. While descending towards the back of the house, he fell on a tin fence and was injured. Later, the police arrested him from there and took him to the hospital.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kurigram Sadar Police Station Kamal Ahmed said that Minhajul is a fugitive accused in two cases. After treatment, he will be produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court of Kurigram.
